All salt isn't iodized, because there is a cost involved in processing it.

It is a critical nutrient, and there are organizations (Kiwanis Club International, Bill Gates Foundation) that are working to install iodization plants around the world, and to have regional laws changed to mandate iodization.

It's more of a problem in third-world countries, where families struggle over the added cost of purchasing the iodized salt. If two cents can buy another piece of chicken to feed your family with, it seems like a pretty simple choice. However, the symptoms of Iodine Deficiency Disorder include mental retardation, which is obviously not the choice that most of us would make for our kids!

Fortunately, it only costs 5 cents per child per year, to supply them with all of the iodine they need. Below is a link to a site that will give you more information...Unicef will gladly take your small donation to help eradicate this global problem!

Iodizede salt has some Iodine in it. Non-iodized salt does not. I think that Iodine is good for you and some people don't get enough in their diet so they get the iodized salt.
