This question intrigued me, mainly because I'd never made a connection between a fictional diamond in a movie with the real Hope Diamond ... so I checked it out and it turns out the the Hope Diamond was bought by a Mrs. Evalyn Walsh McLean, of Washington D.C. from Cartier in 1911. The Titanic sank on 14 April 1912 ... so the diamond was apparently already safe in the U.S.!
The diamond was bought by Harry Winston Inc. of New York City from Mrs. McLean's estate in 1949 and On November 10, 1958, they donated the Hope diamond to the Smithsonian Institution - it's never been owned by Elizabeth Taylor ....

WRONG, not Liz Taylor,

The Hope Diamond is a large (45.52 carat), deep blue diamond, currently housed in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. The diamond is legendary for the curse it supposedly visits upon its possessors. The Hope Diamond appears a brilliant blue to the naked eye because of trace amounts of boron within the diamond. The Hope Diamond exhibits red phosphorescence under ultraviolet light and is classified as a Type IIb diamond.
