Any idea why they would want it? The request makes me uncomfortable, because that's all anyone needs for identity theft, and I have no guarantee their records are secure. I've not had a chance to talk to them yet, but was curious to see if anyone had any input before I did so.

The apartment management company needs this information to comply with tax laws. There should be no worry about the company wanting this type of information. Furthermore it is safer to have this information on the people that live in your community in order to obtain background information.

Are you already in the apartment? Is it a furnished apartment? If so, they may want to know how they can find you, if you take off with their furniture.
Yes, that is a lot of personal info to give them. If you're not already renting there, I think I'd look elsewhere.
Looking at the above answers, maybe ask them if you can just show them the license and Social Security card. That would prove to them that you are a legal resident. Either way, save up and buy a house. That'll fix everything.

I am a landlord and I require that of my leaseholder as well, so I have ID on the people who actually LIVE in the unit. The Section 8 tenants have been prone to put down names of people that aren't living there, just to get the voucher.

I do it so I can verify the number of people in each unit, to establish "normal" wear and tear, as well as if there is a problem with the neighbors, or drugs...

I have had to go to the police myself about drugs being sold out of a house, and I was glad I had all the info they needed to make the report/ start an investigation.

My first appartment complex asked for the same thing. They are running a credit/license check to see if you or your roomates are in financial/legal trouble. The are covering their bases, just in case someone in your household is or was in financial/legal distress and/or might do it again. If you don't comply, they just won't allow you to live there (that was the case with my first appartment). Also, check the laws regarding landlords and tenants in your state... you will be quite suprised how many more rights YOU have as compared to your landlord.

It sounds like they are trying to run your credit report, or possibly they are trying to avoid renting to illegals. Cold as it may seem, I think they probably have a right to know who they are renting to.
