There seems to be a problem with the Pet category of Yahoo Answers. People are mistakenly asking questions that should only be directed at a vet. I can only assume people have trouble recognising an emergency. So, here are the circumstances under which you should NOT waste your time on Yahoo Answers..

-if your pet appears to be in any pain
- if your animal is vomiting/has severe diarrhoea
-if your pet refuses to eat or drink
-if your animal is in labour or is pregnant and hasn't been checked by a vet
-if you have ANY question about newborn animals

Here are circumstances where use of Yahoo Answers for Pets is appropriate:
- if you are interested in people's opinions
-if you want ideas for naming pets
-any general NON-MEDICAL query
-if you need emotional support
If there you suspect there is anything wrong with your pet - don't wait. Vets are trained for a long time to help you, and on here you don't know WHO is answering, so how can you possibly trust their advice???

Not trying to say who can and can't ask advice - anyone can of course - I'm just trying to point people in the right direction for the sake of their pet's health. This really is not the forum for people whose animals are in trouble.

For further clarification, here are some examples of some questions appropriate for Yahoo Answers in my belief (these are not quoted)
-"What should I name by dog?"
-"How can I help my [relative] get over the death of their pet?"
"What would be a good dog for me to get?"
"How do you come to terms with a cancer diagnosis?"

And questions that should be directed at a vet:
-"Help! My puppy has vomiting and diarrhoea!"
-"What's wrong with my pet?"
-"My dog is having trouble passing her puppies, what should I do?"

...how cool of you to use your points to try to help people...it amazes me, consistently, how many people ask for advice that is obviously medical in nature, and requires an exam...would you trust Y!Answers to tell you whether you should take your child to a doc?....seriously...and then of course you have the idiots who tell you to rub the cat's nose in urine...or smack a cat...bravo to you, chalice....indeed,you do not know who is answering...it could very well be a sadist who knows what to do to make your cat worse...think about that, people....there are humans who truly despise cats out there, you know....

I think that people on here should be able to ask medical questions about their animals if they have minor symptoms-- before they spend a fortune on a vet. As long as their animals arent in severe pain, dont have any open gashes etc... they should be able to consult us about minor things like ear scratching, diahhreah, not eating food and THEN decide to take them to the vet.... Most peole realise that our opinions and answers are not to replace that of a vets or diagnose them and when the common answer is, take your animal to the vet- they usually do. Sometimes they ask because they arent sure if its a minor or MAJOR problem that can or cant be solved with some home remedies....Theres nothing we can do about it people will still ask these questions before consulting a vet and sometimes after. Thanks for trying but what can ya do

go julia!
definatelty to the point!
AND to all you people who are against this fair comment - fair enough people can ask for opinions from others but let that be after a professional has taken a look at the problem (if serious as stated by chalice) rather than letting the situation worsen whilst its being debated about!

Thank you!
I completely agree. You see so many questions where the plain and simple answer is take your animal to the vet. Also, there are people who claim to be vets online, answering the questions. But PLEASE, youhave no idea if they are lying or not. Talk to your own vet first and foremost!

that was very nicely said and to the point, couldn't have said it better. we all need to take care of our little friends no matter how big or small they are and as a duty to them have to be able to know when a vet should be called.
