Can anybody reccomend any books on Irish History? Im looking to understand the whole English and Ireland controversy, where it started, why, who, what, when, how? I know a bit of information but am looking to expand my knowledge on the situation. Preferably something that is straight forward and easy to understand. Thanks

"A short history of Ireland" by Richard Killeen is a good down and dirty read that might be helpful. It covers ancient history to modern times and covers everything. If you want some historical fiction I think Morgan Llywelyn's series of modern Irish history is wonderful. The series begins with the book 1916 then goes to 1921, 1949 and 1972; the fifth book in the series is due out soon. This series provides a good insight into modern issues between the neighboring islands beginning with The Easter Rising.

"How the Irish saved civilization" is a great book to help understand Ireland's role in world history. Its pretty straight forward with a great deal of ancient history, but doesn't fully address modern history or much information regarding the English-Irish issues. It does however, lay the groundwork to how some of the issues between the two countries may have began.

Other good reads include: The Rising, Ireland: A History.

Most everything I can think of are novels and fictional history. Good luck on your search...

If you want to try some novels, which fictionalize names but nonetheless give a detailed view from the Irish point of view, you might enjoy "Trinity" by Leon Uris -- your public library has it, for sure. It was a huge hit whe it came out in 1976.

The books was so influential that Irish activist Bobby Sands, who died of a hunger strike while in a British prison, memorized "Trinity" and recited it to his fellow prisoners before he died in 1981.

Uris later wrote a sequel called "Redemption."

My particular favorite is Michael Cahill's How the Irish Saved Civilization.

Perhaps "The Search of Ireland's Heros" by McCaffrey. I'm not sure there's enough info there though. Also: Try a search on Irishbooks.com -Good luck.
