Have tried installing it without formatting but it says that it will just install it ASWELL as the other windows XP. Do i assume I need to format the hard drive to get the old Windows XP off so I can get the new one on?

Best to format.

I recommend so, yes. Formatting the disk will delete any issues, and then you can start again.

Get all of your data off before you start.

Some systems also has a restore CD. Use that.

in theory if you don't reformat than it will leave your current files (my docs etc) there which could be useful

If you are re installing due to problems then I recomend that you format the drice as you may not fix the problem

You don't HAVE to re-format but it is the best option, especially if you're having disk problems.
