Hi Guys I am British and am desperate to get away from the United Kingdom...I'm only 18 but tenacious and I plan to go to Australia on a Working-Holiday visa in about September...November. I am not a good planner so from there I plan to catch a bus to Central Station and book into the nearest YHA (I have YHA Card).......How long will it take though to find rented accomodation and sign and move in? A few days, weeks??? Where are the best areas for an Eighteen Year Old to live in Sydney? (I plan to travel through Oz later)....As I read that the working holiday visa only allows you to earn upto $450 A Dollars per month and thus I need to live somewhere cheap.....Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers

Try newtown. a short bus ride from the city and a very cool wee district.

About finding accomodation in Sydney - be warned! The best place to find rental ads in the 'domain' supplement of the Sydney Morning Herald' on Saturdays. Get it early. the houses and flats have viewing slots which are generally 15-30 min only! Get up early, read through all the areas you're interested in and plan where you need to be and when. if you're looking in more than one or two areas its better if you have a lift to get around.

If you want the beach, try bondi (FULL of other brits and irish!), coogee, bronte. Alternatively try manly, though as its on the other side of the harbour it can be tricky to get to late at night as the ferries stop around midnight. if you want inner city, try looking around the city centre itself, newtown, glebe (also pretty boho and very central), broadway or surrey hills.

There's a great YHA right next to Central. don't be too freaked out, sydney's great, but it took me a few weeks to learn from all my mistakes! IM me of you need more info.

living in sydney is very expensive. youll need to find somewhere shared - there are a few good sites online to do this. You wont know where the suburbs are located, so find a map of sydney online that has suburbs marked - go for the suburbs closest to the city and beaches (around bondi - there are always plenty of shared places there and its a good place for a young tourist to be) area. that simple.

You should be able to find a shared place within a couple of weeks of getting here, if not before. Theres plenty of them, but there will probably be a lot of others applying. Dont worry, aussies love giving tourists a hard time, and showing off their country, Im sure youll find a place quite quickly.
If you stay at back packers or the YHA, then you are bound to meet up with others who know of places or are looking for places too.

btw... the YHA isnt the cheapest place you could stay - try a few of the back packing places around central... theres heaps of them.

Try Randwick near the UNSW. There are some temporary accommodation for students. I stayed in this place during my Graduate Studies at the UNSW.
