As you can tell, you are getting a wide range of answers and none of them the same. The best thing you can do for yourself is go to a specialty running store and have them measure your feet, check your gait and so forth. Bring an old pair of running shoes (if you have them) so they can check the treads on the bottom. It helps to see how you are landing on your feet and if you need any corrections. If you don't feel that the staff is very informed or helpful, go somewhere else. I went for a long time trying to find shoes on my own ( I went through many pairs) and didn't find what worked for me until I finally went and got properly fitted. If you have high arches you are probably a Supinator....which means you probably need a neutral shoe. Preferably a Neutral + shoe which is made for heavier runners, or runners that get in a lot of miles. As far as the brand goes, in my opinion, no brand is better than another. Everyone has different needs and preferences. It's just a matter of trying them on and finding what works.

D is the normal width for men. E is wide. EE is extra wide. EEE is almost as wide as it is long. anything wider is for a duck, I think.
