i need to know basic wiring just to run and charge. its a 350 w/coil in distributor cap.i know to go from start on switch to starter .constant hot battery to switch, battery to starter. now what? alt. to? distributor from? is there a volt reg. somewhere before distributor ?1970 c10

If I'm not mistaken, you can use a remote starter switch and bypass all of the wiring for the ignition switch as long as you have the battery cable to the starter. The remote starter switch will have two cables with clamp ends; simply put it across the starter solenoid and use that to turn the engine over. If you don't have a remote starter you can buy one at a parts store relatively inexpensively. Using the remote starter will alllow you to bypass the neutral safety switch as well.

Once the engine is spinning, you'll need to have power to the battery terminal of the distributor cap to light it off. That power typically comes from the run portion of the ignition switch. I don't see why you couldn't run a fused jumper from the battery positive to that terminal for a test. There are four terminals on the distributor cap; the battery terminal is the forward-most outside terminal. If I'm not mistaken, the rear-most inner and outer terminals come from the ignition module in the distributor.

Longer term, you can use the wiring diagrams in the aftermarket Chilton manuals as they are pretty good reproductions of the original manuals. if you can't get it to run, then definitely buy the Chilton manual for that model.

I think the alternator on that vehicle has the internal voltage regulator. Again, for a test, as long as the battery is charged there should be enough voltage to fire the plugs without the alternator to run off of. The internal voltage regulator alternators have a plug on the top with two wires coming out of the internal regulator as well as a terminal on the back of the alternaor. if you just have two wire terminals on the back of the alternator then you have an external regulator. External regulators were mounted on the left front behind the battery on most GM vehicles of the late 60's

get your self a Chilton gm full size truck 1970-79 book number is 28620 check your library or amzon it the book
battery red goes to starter alternator wires black goes to ammeter and dark green goes to voltage regulator /dk blue from v.r to igniton switch and ignition coil
