Sorry... You will need to get the password from your friend, unless he gave you the backup system restore disks.

Have you tried the guest account?

Also the usual run of the mill XP install usualy has the administrator password as blank so try that.

You say you need to get into the computer...is this to use it or read what's on there? If you need to recover data then download one of the live linux CDs, such as Knoppix and boot from that. That will give you a fully working OS with access to the files on the laptop.

Of course, you are telling the truth and this is completely legit, and you're not trying to get into someones computer without permission, right? ; )

Try booting into safe mode by hitting the "F8" key a bunch of times right before the "Windows XP" logo pops up when you turn it on.

From there, you can log into the administrators account, this account by default will not have a password.

In this account, you can edit the old profile, or create your own to log in to. You would do this from "User accounts" in the control panel.

If that doesn't work, there are a few password clearing programs that work off of bootable CD's, but you would be better off just waiting for your friend to call you back.

Windows XP is the nice OS, situated for your hardware. Windows 7 isn't an alternative, your PC is simply too historic. XP Service Pack three runs greater with a million GB of RAM. And, a GB of RAM is filth low cost at the present time, however you make a decision.

You can download this software and burn it to a CD. It will bootable. It will allow you to change the Administrator password to whatever you want. I usually just set it to nothing and then just login without a password using this process. It seems to work best. But.... It works like a champ!
