I know that stylists kick back some of what they make to the "house". Do they "rent" the chair? or is it a percentage?, and what is the benefit to the stylist in this arrangement?

It can be anything, depending on the salon's policies. Some salons rent stations to stylists. Others hire stylists for an hourly wage and pay them commissions on product sales.
