There are five pitchers in the rotation, and usually 6 or 7 in the bullpen. Periodically, if there's a double-header, a sixth pitcher (either from the bullpen or a call-up from the minors) will make a start.

Most major league teams are running a 5-man starting rotation in MLB today. There are typically 10 or 11 total pitchers on an average roster, some of whom would be available for spot starts as needed, but the base rotation is usually 5 pitchers.

First...the Mets started 14 pitchers last season, not 12.
The typical team will have either 12 or 13 pitchers on its roster at any one time. It is very unusual that they will have anything other than a 5 man rotation, but it happens occasionally. There are also probably a few guys on each team that are capable of being starters, that are around in case someone might have to miss a start.

Ok, why are people answering how many pitchers are on a team or how many are in a bullpen??? Isn't the question how many are in the rotation?
The answer to that is 5. They may bring a guy up or put in a guy for a 6th, they may have more than 5 starters, but the actual rotation usually consists of 5 players.

Most teams start the year with a 5 man rotation then will need to have additional starters due to injuries or ineffectiveness. The 4 man rotation is a thing of the past. The Royals used a 6 man rotation a year or so ago.
Last year there were 320 pitchers that started at least one game.
In 2005 there were 280.
309 in 2004
311 in 2003
312 in 2002
That averages to about 306 starters per year or aproximately 10 starters per team.

Four and then sometimes five if there is a reason. For example, one of the starters may miss a turn in the rotation the team is playing a doubleheader, or the team has several days in a row with no day off. That is when the 5th pitcher in the rotation works the game.

Today it is a 5 man rotation... on rare occurances you can see 4... Back in the 70's and earlier, they actually used to go with a 4 man set rotation... that's back when the league consisted of work horses and the talent wasn't so watered down.
It's possible that home-run and other offensive numbers tend to spike because of the mediocrity at the bottom of the rotation.

The Mets used a total of 12 different starters last season. I would say the average is somewhere from 7-10. Most pitchers are little crybabies who have to go on the DL for the slightest little thing and cant pitch more than 6 innings.
