It's true... schools do not teach you real world programming. try making a simple contact manager program in .net using microsft.msdn.com examples as your guide, then keep adding modules... soon you will have an entire management system. You can also go to xtras.net and look through some of the controls for demos that come with code samples... that's a great way to learn by example

The best way to learn .NET programming, IMO, is from books and online. There are hundreds, if not more, books on .NET from Amazon - starting with the simplest (http://www.amazon.com/C-2005-Dummies-Computer-Tech/dp/0764597043/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-5031099-9474349?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175112678&sr=1-1 ) and going all the way to highly advanced, specific topics.

Try http://www.hdnug.org/ (Houston Dot Net User Group) and ask around for more local resources.
