I was just wondering why do people feel the need to be in control of everything? And when they feel that they are loosing control, they pull out all the stops and go absolutely crazy? It's like desperate times call for desperate measures when they are loosing control. This has always been a question in the back of my mind.

Because they may feel insecure with themselves and feel that if they "control" everything and everyone around them...then their lives will be better and more secure. They may feel this when they are in a relationship and are feeling insecure about themselves and feel that they may lose this person. It works like a chain reaction. They start off being a bit controlling...then the person they are trying to control tells them or shows them that they do not like it and do not want to be controlled. This, therefore, triggers the "controller's" "controllingness" even more and it just gets ugly from then on... =\

I think the entire basis of a control freak revolves around power. A lack of power over themselves and their lives turns into a feeling that they have to control everything and everyone around them in order to feel powerful.

When a control freak looses control they usually do "act out" for fear of genuinely having to re-asses and re-work their own lives.

You basically answered your own question: people who feel the need to control don't feel like they ARE in control...so they are desperate for some kind of personal power.

I think for some people it is a matter of their knowing they are pretty capable, and their ego makes them think they're the only one in the world who is. As a result, they appoint themselves "parent or guardian" of everyone they know and think if others do things their way everyone will be better off. Their ego also makes them need to be "king of everybody".

For other people its a matter of feeling helpless and trying to control others in order to have a little power.

Maybe there are other reasons, but the above two are two I have seen for myself in certain others.
