I have had a netgear router for about a year now. Its been perfect. Only time I ha d problems with it cutting out was when my broadband speed increased. This wasn't a router problem something to do with my adsl service. This was before I went wireless.
Am now completely wireless and have no problems at all. My wireless G settings are set to channel 9. Check that your MTU settings are set t either 1492 or 1500 and I have never downloaded any firmware.
I have a version 2 DG834G if tis helps
Most things these days works on the same or similar frequency so maybe something is interfering with it or your neighbour is trying to connect your service. Try being wired to the router for a bit and see if you still have same problems.
Be careful of someone telling you it has something to do with low energy lightbulbs in your house. Thats the answer I got when I said my new tv was turning over to sky on its own. I took the bloody things out it wasn't true. Bit early for an Aprils fool. If you need to know any of the setting I got on my router drop me an email,

Yes, I do!!!! I answered a question on here the other day about this. Aparently it is something to do with the configuration of your wireless card and the default setting on the box. I have a Dell laptop and the encryption on the card is different to the netgear box's default setting, every now and then I will loose connection and have to log on to the netgear website to reconfigure. It doesnt help that sky are my internet provider and they are as helpful as a bunch of toddlers!!
Who is your internet provider??

Check the wireless environment. It could be that you are sharing a wireless channel with your neighbor, and that will cause you problems. Use software called Netstumbler to see what channels are available. You install it on your laptop. Between channels 1, 6, and 11 choose one that is not in use. If none are available choose one with a weak signal. Once you run Netstumbler all of this will make more sense.

I bought 3 netgear routers about 2 years ago. One for my house, one for my inlaws, and one for my parents. After about 1 year they all started dropping connections. Firmware was updated, changed locations inthe houses, tried everything. Went and bought a different brand and I have never had to reset it. Now all three houses have the new router.

The most common reason is that you are getting out of range. Check your signal strength.
