There are two types of person in English law: natural persons and legal persons. You and I are both natural persons, i.e. individuals. If, however, we set up a company together, the company would be a legal person and we would be acting in the name of the company in carrying out corporate transactions, not as ourselves. The real reason for deeming a company to be a person is that in this way the company can be prosecuted for criminal offences or sue and be sued in civil courts.

Natural legal personality as opposed to a limited company for example which has a legal personality of its own, meaning the company can sue and be sued in its own right - with any damages it may incurr being restricted to company money, rather than the personal money of its directors.
