what do you think about the future of someone that has a bachelors degree and someone that doesnt have a bachelors degree?

It doesn't matter what I think -- we can look at the facts.

On average, a 23 year old with a BS or BA makes $20K per year more than soneone the same age without a degree. The gap widens as they get older.

In addition, the one wiht the degree is more likely to be happy with his job.

Sure, a few guys without degrees do well. But for every college dropout like Bill Gates there are hundreds of guys without degrees that are hoping you want fries with your burger.

Having a bachelors degree is good, but we tend to overemphasize its importance. For whatever reason, we tend to look down on awesome jobs that do not require a bachelors degree. Skilled electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, car mechanic etc...what we might call "vocations" are awesome rewarding jobs, that do not require a bachelors degree. What matters is you find something you like, and you get good at it.

I have no idea why there is this obsession that everyone has to go through four years of studying information that will probably be irrelevant to that person's future. Don't get me wrong, a bachelor's degree can lead to a great future, but it isn't for everybody. If you know how to fix a car, that can be a great career.

There is always that story of the high school kid who was good at computers. The kid was really good at programming because the kid was obsessed. Without any post-secondary education, the kid got a great job. Ok, we aren't all great computer programmers, but pursue that obsession (within some reason...not all of us can be American idols). It's true, if you're a good hairdresser, you can make six-figures--it really does happen. If you're a good plumber, you can also make six-figures.

A bachelor's degree really isn't for everyone. Likewise, carpentry isn't for everyone. What matters is you find something that you can get good at. People who hire look for competency. Degrees can sometimes indicate that, but trust me...the reason why many people with bachelor's degrees can't find jobs is because they aren't very competent. For a company, someone with a high school education who can do things is worth much more than someone with a master's who is all talk and not much else.

I have to say that I have a bachelors degree and was offered a job that only paid 20,000 a year. So even having a bachelors degree doesn't get you into a good job now a days.

There are people out there with bachelor degrees that work in dead end jobs like a retail store or at a restaurant that only require a high school diploma.

it really just depends on what you major in and if there is a high demand with what field of study you got your degree in.

More and more entry level jobs at good companies are requiring Bachelor's Degrees, and if not, you MUST have one in order to move up. You can get by without a Bachelor's if you don't mind working in retail, or food services, or the like. You don't need one to be in certain fields, like cooking in a restaurant or automotives, for that you can just get a trade certificate. Even having a Bachelor's Degree doesn't guarantee you a good job anymore because so many people are getting their Masters.
