I am thinking along the same lines as you. My son is 17 soon and thinking about having his own car, so I have drawn up a short list of small cars/engines for cheapest insurance cover and running costs. however running a car properly does not come cheap.
Ford Fiesta 1000/1100cc
Renault Clio1100cc (?)
Peugeot 106 1100cc
Mini Metro/Rover Metro 1000/1100cc
Older style Mini 850/1000cc
Citroen AX 1000cc
Citroen Saxo 1100cc
This list is not exhaustive (no pun intended) but you should be able to get any one of these for up to £1000.00. You will probably be looking at something around 10 yrs old and if looked after should give you good service for a few years.
Happy 17th next week!

At 17 you'll be paying your £3000 to insure a 1000cc shopping trolley like a Corsa or a Panda so forget any idea of a fast/sporty car because you'll never insure it.

It isn't just the buying of the car you have to think of the insurance is going to kill you.So very small engined is your only option, nothing bigger than 1.1.
As others have said your best bet will be a Fiesta or a Corsa.
Aim for the 4 door models as they tend to be slightly cheaper to insure.
Fiat and VW do some fine small cars aswell.
Enjoy your new freedom.

Small battered diesel car. Less on insurance and tax, more mpg and if it's already a bit dented it won't matter so much when you scrape it on a wall whilst parking.
Peugeot 106.
Corsa.
Hyundai accent
Fiesta 1.1
Buy private not from a dealer and you should pay no more than £500.

Find a car that you like (Fiesta for example), do not buy it straight away. Then get an insurance quote and see if you can still afford it.
Might be best to wait until you are finished being a student and can really afford it.

Well first you have to look in the papers and see what they have to sell first. You would not want to put a pound more than a car is worth too. If you are mechanically inclined you can probably get one a way lot cheaper than one that is running good. After you get one with the money you have then go to auto zone.com and it may have the tips on how to do maintenance on the vehicle.

something with a small engine like a Ford Fiesta or a Renault Clio. Look in your local newspaper for second hand models and make sure you get someone to test drive it for you before you buy!

i suggest something small and economical, my first was a fiat uno, then i went up to a punto, an older punto would be good because they are nice to look at, cheap tax and good on petrol but whatever you choose shop around for your insurance, i put the car in my dads name and go on as additional driver fully comp, this brings the premium down, happy and safe driving
