the accepted clothing for a professional in the business world is a suit and tie. for a man to appear in casual clothing reflects badly on the intent to conduct business on an adult and professional level. while some companies have embraced "casual Friday's" there are many others who believe that it undermines the professional atmosphere of the workplace.

dress clothing need not be expensive to be classy. women who chose to wear pantsuits or skirt suits often mix and match jackets and blouses with solid skirts in order to create the appearance of more clothing without spending a lot of money.

The idea is to look clean, well groomed and ready to work as an adult in the marketplace. While some businesses are not as formal (a skateboard shop, for instance) and a suit would be out of place, the reverse is true for a high rise office building - thrashed jeans and a t-shirt would make you look more like a visitor than an employee.
