I am going to school to for mortuary science. I am almost done with my general ed courses and then I have to go through an interview with the head of the program before I can start the actual program/classes. The thing is, it says having at least one years experience is highly recommended before entering the program (for obvious reasons). I don’t have any, and I don’t have any ‘hook ups’ either in the business. But who would want to hire someone in that field who has NO experience?! What should I do?

Copied from the Georgia Career Information System:

"... the best way to get hired is through connections made in mortuary school. Many mortuary schools have close ties with local funeral homes. They often provide job placement for graduates. They can also provide internship placement for students still in school. These internships often lead to permanent jobs."

This being the case, I would talk with the placement office at your school. Also keep in mind that many funeral homes are small, family-run businesses. Door-to-door or telephone calls may be a good way to open a dialog with a potential employer on how you can get your foot in the door.

Even if they aren't able to hire you, they can advise you on what steps you might take to obtain "entry-level" employment in the field.
