I'm going to attend college in september and will be living in a dorm, does anyone have any suggestions about must haves for my room? I'm trying to get some of my shopping done ahead of time and would really appreciate some insight. Anything that you or someone you may have known found helpful. Some general tips are welcomed too!!!

Thanks!

Let's take a look around my dorm room--a small fan, a printer/extra paper/ink, a hot pot/coffee maker, a mini-fridge, an iron and ironing board, sheets, a comforter/bedspread, a desk lamp, paper plates, plastic forks/knives/spoons (or a set of real tableware), tupperware bins (can be used for eating out of or storing food in!), cups/mugs, plastic drawers, disinfecting wipes/spray, a small radio, a pair of slippers, shower shoes, trash bin, laundry basket (the collapsing ones are fantastic), a seat cushion (unless you don't mind sitting on an uncomfortable chair), a phone with an answering machine, extra dry-erase markers if you have a white board for your door, a broom/mini-vacuum, Swiffer Wet Mop thingies are AMAZING, a door mat so people don't track mud into your room, bookends, a folding chair for when people come over....

Those are all the big things in my room. You'll also want things like plenty of meds (from what I've seen, the medical centers on most campuses are HORRIBLE), food of whatever variety you prefer, pens, paper, folders, binders, notebooks, scissors, glue, tape, etc. Extension cords and surge protector strips are amazing things. If you have communal bathrooms, you'll want to get yourself a nice bathrobe and a shower caddy to put all of your shower stuff into. Shoe racks are great too.

Be careful about reading the list of what you can and can't have at your school. A lot of times, you'll end up with an RA that's a stickler for rules and will make you get rid of something if you're not technically supposed to have it.

Make sure your sheets will fit your bed! A lot of dorm beds are twin XL! Target has these amazing jersey XL sheets.
Extension cords! Without a doubt there will be one set of plugs in the room that will be on the opposite side of the room, under someone else's desk/bed.
A reading lamp. Alarm clock. lots of extra kleenex and cold meds, when a cold hits the dorm, you WILL get it. mini fridge, extra lightbulbs, printer paper if you have a printer, clear plastic storage bins (good for food, or books, or clothes, or whatever)

It's been a while for me but my must haves included a small fridge, an ironing board(you can get the small table top kinds), a popcorn popper, storage boxes for under the bed. Those are just a few that come to mind right away. Make sure you check and see what items are allowed and which are not.

You will need orginizational boxes/stackables due to small space, you will need all of the obvious... toiletries / bedding.

I had a small fridge in mine, which held another college must-have...beer.

Also small microwave. And a laundry basket or a hamper to keep dirty clothes off of the floor. Those things are so tiny, they can get cluttered up real fast!

If you are going to have a roommate and know who it is already contact them and see who can purchase what for the shared items. You only need one fridge, microwave, tv, etc.
Also find out the size of the room. some of the newer ones are more suite style, so there is more room. but a typical dorm room has limited space, so you dont want to buy too much.

When i was in college and lived in the dorms i had a grilled cheese maker. I am telling you i used it like 10 times a day b/c you can do EVERYTHING with it. You can make all sorts of sandwhiches (not just grilles cheese) I made little pizza's in it and toast and grilled ham and cheese. So many things. easy and quick.
