Suddenly the tire locked up and did not respond to the steering wheel. A while back I slid into a curb and it threw my alignment on the left front tire off. What can it be?

The steering wheel did not lock up it was the tire, and in order to make it turn had to kick it. The steering wheel responds to the other tire.

How much do you estimate it would be to fix this?

Do Not Attempt To Drive This Vehicle
You have seriously damaged the controller mechanism when you struck the curb and until you get this fixed by a Qualified Mechanic-- you are running extreme risk in causing a genuine disaster !!!
There are several things that this may entail--- you have tie rods and upper and lower controllling arms that may need repair --- but what ever the damage actually is-- you are not safe until this work is done---and done RIGHT !!!

a tie rod end either the inner or out, depending on how hard the curb was hit you may have damaged the steering rack. if the wheel does not respond to steering have it towed to a shop it is too dangerous to drive.

I think you mean the wheel locked up. I suggest you take it to a garage.
