In addition to the museum itself, allow time for the Hayden Planetarium, which is a physical part of it.

"Natural history" is a wide collection of all biological sciences and earth sciences. So prepare yourself to take in a quick scan of every thing that is available, because there may be things of inrterest that you don't know to look for.

An ever-popular exhibit is the dinosaurs and other "prehistoric" animals. You may like the Egyptian mummies and other Egyptology. There is an exhibit of gemstones, because natural history includes geology and mineralogy. The evolution of humans is interesting. There is one hall after another of invertebrates of all phyla. There are the Indians of the Northwest, African tribesmen. In one vast hall, there is a mounted whale suspended from the ceiling.

There are dioramas of all sizes and topics. These are "show windows" containing scenes. There may be a large one showing stuffed animals grazing in an African plain. There are smaller ones showing stuffed birds in their nest in a tree.

The cafeteria is nice. In the same space, there is a more expensive restaurant with wait-persons. You will want to break early for lunch, maybe 11, because it can get crowded. The restaurant people get testy if cafeteria patrons try to take tables in the restaurant section.

Leave time for the museum shop!
