While Freddie was a true legend and had an awesome voice (and was a wonderful showman) I prefer the likes of Joe Cocker, Bryan Adams and Michael McDonald (I like a gritty, soulful voice).

Queen were great band, but without Freddie they would have just died at the end of the 70's with all the other glam rock acts when punk appeared. For some reason in Britain, it's not cool to like Queen if you are under 40, but kids just have no taste these days. There's no was Oasis or any of the modern bands can hold a candle to the guitar work of Brian May, with their 2 chord crap.
Greatest vocalist ever? That's a matter of opinion, i'm a David Coverdale fan and I hapen to think his is the best voice in rock, but Freddie's songwriting was legendery. His lyrics could be cheeky, clever, sudgestive and poigniant, but always thought provoking.
It's a shame he's gone, but, sometimes you have to lose a rock star to gain a legend!

I'd agree with him being a great vocalist, but the greatest, hmmmm. It would depend on genre and gender. There are to many fantastic vocalists out there to be able to pin one down as being the greatest. For instance, Tom Jones. Now, I don't like Tom Jones Music but it can't be denied that he has a great voice. Similarly Roy Orbison. Don't really like his stuff but great style none the less. Recent vocalists rate as well. Lou Rhodes from Lamb has a fantastic voice and it can be absolutely heart breaking. Lisa Gerrard has an amazing voice also. I could go on but it would take the rest of the day.

Freddy Mercury was power, but what about the Motown voices of the sixties and seventies...and in the UK, what about Nick Drake (1948-1974)? He may be dismissed as a hippy warbler, but was he not a treasure who could rub shoulders with better known vocalists?
Does it also count of that is being sung - Queen had the advantage of Freddy Mercury's pitch and tone...could you imaging him singing for, say, Roxy Music? And what about Ian Curtis of Joy Division - people might say it is an 'acquired' taste, but hearing his voice on some of the later songs before he died in 1980 was pure pain, which made Kurt Cobain's last months (and departure) second division!

Everyone has their opinions on this, as music is very subjective. But if I were to choose a rock/pop vocalist whom I thought was the best, I would have to say that Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues has the best voice overall.
