Right now, I am failing Math with a 40% for the MARKING PERIOD. And when I get my semester grade, they average the 40% and my semester to get my final grade for that semester...so what percent will I at least need to get to pass this math class.

The formula to figure this out is (Period Grade + Semester Grade) / 2 = Final Grade. (Assuming the period and semester grades are worth an equal weight. If this is not the case then you would take the weighted average of the two: A*Period Grade + B*Semester Grade = Final Grade; where A & B are % and add up to 100%) So depending on what you need to pass, just solve for the semester grade and you'll be all set.

On second thought, given that you are failing math, I'll solve it for you so you can just plug in the numbers and go. Just substitute the required passing grade in for Final Grade in the equations below.

Equal weighting approach: Semester Grade = 2*Final Grade - Period Grade (Plug in the passing grade, say 60% and you get: Semester Grade = 2*60 - 40 = 80% to pass with a 60% overall grade)

Weighted average approach: Semester Grade = (Final Grade - A*Period Grade) / B (Let's say your Period grade is worth 4/10ths of your overall grade and the Semester grade is worth 6/10ths of your overall grade. Also, that you need 60% to pass. Then, Semester Grade = 60 - .4*40 / .6 (Remember that A+B = 100%) 73.333%. The reason this answer is lower than the first one is because in this case your Period grade is worth less overall in the scheme of things.

What's passing? is it a 70? If so, you will need a 100. If it's not 70, subtract 40 from the lowest grade possible to pass the class. Add that number to the minimum required to pass, that;s what you need to make.
