There was a dog and a cat. I think the cat was named Chester, but I'm not sure. Also there was a rabbit. The rabbit might have been a vampire of some sort. This all sounds really weird to me but I think that is how the story goes. I think there was more than one book with these characters, but I'm not sure of that either.

This book is Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery by Deborah and James Howe. It was wonderful. There were also some sequels. One was Howliday Inn.

oh, Bunnicula! That is by James and Debra Howe. I loved that series. The Celery Stalks at Midnight was one of my favorite books growing up. I think that there are four books in the series. Hope you find a copy!
