only answer this if you know for sure, thanks,..iam a giving my brother-in-law my car it has 6 months MOT no tax, he is putting it on his driveway for a couple of months(without road tax) untill he passes his driving test.....the house he lives in is a council owned house, can he get any tax fines for having the car parked on his drive (the car will not be driven on a public road untill he passes his test....thanks.

thanks all, i know a little about the SORN, but did not know if it applied to a car being off road for a few month...thanks for the info, very helpfull.

Yes, if the tax has expired he can be fined. You will need to declare your car as off the road with a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). This is free and can be done online (using the DVLA website) very easily.

you need a sorn statement if it currently doesn't have tax. easy to do online and saves a fine. If you have tax then send in the disc and get a refund on a percentage of the remaining tax. You can get fined for a vehicle on private land with no tax unless it has a sorn. Just go onto the dvla website and enter all the details.

You need to notify DVLA with a SORN notice if you don't intend taxing the car. This is mandatory and failure to do it will cost you an immediate £80 fine.You should have notified them immediately the tax run out

It is YOU who need to declare the SORN notice if the car is registered in your name as it will be you who gets the fine, not your brother..

I did this when my had had lots of problems and would have def. failed its MOT.
You will need to declare it off the road.

YES HE WILL GET FINED HE HAS TO DECLARE THE CAR OFF THE ROAD,S.O.R.N.THE FORM IS ATTACHED TO YOUR REGISTRATION DOCUMENT.
