My 3 year old broke her leg a month ago...the doctor said she would be in the cast for 4 weeks since little kids heal really quickly, monday we went to get it off and it hadnt healed as well as he had hoped. her leg was in a cast all the way up to her thigh with her knee bent and her foot pointed downward. Now he recasted it to a short cast and it is under her knee and her foot is flat he wants her in it for another 2 weeks. What would cause it to not heal as fast as expected? I thought this was really weird since it wasnt a complete fracture and there were no complications. Any ideas?

...she's fine...
The doctor was just assessing the potential activity of your little one and matching that assessment (albeit brief) with the need to let her leg continue to heal. "Better to err on the safe side," what with all the lawsuits these days...

It's still within the range of expected healing rates. They were just being a little optimistic initially. Is her short-leg cast a walking cast? That is, is she now allowed to bear weight? With some leg fractures, that is normal and helps it heal (but not with all--this is a question, not a suggestion).

Different people heal at different rates. My daughter had hip surgery at 3, and sometimes we were ahead of the dr, and sometimes we were behind.
