My daughter is allowed to have and use her cell phone in her high school... Because there is no policy in place, the students are allowed to text back and forth during class... leave the class to answer a call... and talk on the phone in the hallways... Her guidance office agrees with me that this should not be allowed but... with no policy in place, our opinion does not matter. We are new at this school and I can assure you, I will become involved with the PTA and the school committee. I am researching here to find what works / doesn't work in your school... What is/is not allowed? What happens if a student violates the policy?

At my school we're not allowed to have them, but most students keep them on silent in their pockets or purses. Some students text friends during study hall and stuff. If a student is caught with a phone, the phone is taken to the office where it is kept until the end of the day. For a first time offense (per semester), the student can claim it at the end of the day, after that a parent must pick it up.

We used to be allowed to have them, but students kept calling or texting others when they knew the other was taking a test or other quiet activity. Not to cheat, but just to distract the class. It got to be too much of a problem.

at my high school the policy was that you are allowed to have cells phone but they can only be used during lunch and break. When in class they would have to be off, and if you were caught texting or if the cell phone rang it would be taken away, and the parent has to pick it up.

we were allowed to have them but they were ONLY supposed to be used during lunch or before/after school. But students still always texted during class. You can't really ban them completely because in case of emergencies. So as long as they are allowed, people are going to defy it. Its hard to believe that your daughters school has NO guidelines. wow.
As far as punishment, most teachers didnt do anything, said comments, but didnt do anything. some would take the cell phone and would return it at the end of class.

We aren't suppose to have them, but everyone uses them. We couldn't do something as extreme as you child's school, but most people text and until they get caught with a teacher. We can typically call in the hallways but most people don't. If you get a strict teacher they will take away your cell phone and it goes to dean, then at the end of the day you can go get it or sometimes next week.

At my school, you can't bring them period(but people do anyway). But if a teacher sees them they take them away & the parent has to pick it up, but if they don't they get thrown out. They do this because it causes a ruckus to happen & the teacher gets mad.
