A is wrong. He believed that it was a natural process.
B is wrong. DNA was not known until the middle 20th century.
D is wrong. Radiation effects and mutations in the genome were not known during Darwin's time.
C is correct. He knew that it was natural selection. He did not know how the traits were passed on to the next generation (enter: Mendel!)

Darwin said "natural selection" was the driving force behind evolution.
He was not entirely correct in that he ignored background radiation, environmental changes, etc.
