Serious question. I've especially notice it with anything made of rubber or plastic.

It is because of the chemicals that they have to spray on them going through customs to kill all bugs that may have gotten into/on the boxes. I work for a company that imports educational toys and furniture for children from China and Thailand and our products have a distinct "smell" and this is why.

Horrific smell. Last 2 pairs of shoes I bought. And just today................a plumbing part I bought at Lowes.....same horrific smell. No bugs to kill in a steel sink stopper. What is that horrific smell???

some of such products are poisonous. be carefull. I am serious. this is a fact from a newspaper.

Maybe its just odors that are picked up while shipping.
