I am looking for a printer that I can hook up to my desktop but still print from my laptop in a different area of my house. Am I looking for the usb connection to find what I need or should I be looking at something else?

Well the best thing for you would be to use ethernet. This would allow you to connect your printer directly to your router. If you use USB (faster than parallel), the drawback would be that in order to print from your laptop, the computer that the printer is connected to via USB would have to be on. With ethernet, it'll always be available.

If your computer is on 24/7 or you just don't care about having to turn it on to print from your laptop, I'd go with the cheaper solution, which is probably the one without the ethernet connection (at least from what I've seen, networked (ethernet) printers are usually $50-100 more than the local equivalent).

If you have your laptop set up on a network which you probably do in order to access the net on both pcs, any printer will work. Set the printer up on the main computer and enable print sharing on that pc. Run the add printer wizard on the laptop and select lan printer!
