The British students need maths and english a-levels (which is like the top level at high school, advanced for seniors). And science courses can help. They can also take IT or programming type courses at most of their schools.

Usually they want someone who's good at math (so take as advanced a level as you can), and do reasonably well in your other courses.

I took computer programming at high school level, and if your school offers related subjects you should try for those. Anything logic based can help, and of course fun courses show that you're "well rounded" and can increase your chances.

In the old days, software engineers had philosophy and history degrees. You still don't need a degree to get the job... but I guess it helps.
