Anyone got any thoughts on why it seems that a pretty big percentage of people in the UK seem to prefer 'dumbed down' culture, like reality tv, trashy celeb mags, walking around with cans of special brew, knocking their kids around, vandalising trees and anything half decent where they live, bragging that 'they've never read a book in their lives' etc etc, whereas a lot of people try to aspire to something better instead, and go to evening classes, or try to get good jobs etc? I don't think its linked to being poor cos I have friends in posher parts of the country who see the same thing - so what's going on? Surely part of being a human being is to try to 'better yourself' or am I just having a rant!

The US is a mixed bag. While million upon millions make the choice to be stupid; a lot of people here care about issues and are intellectuals. You never hear about us. You only hear about the retards who know all American Idol contestants by the first name yet cannot find Florida on the map.

Stupid should be painful

I'm so glad to hear someone else say it. Everything is dumbing down. I think it means that the average or the majority of people are dumber than you or me. Of course, there are a lot of bright people out there smarter than me, too. They are smart enough to withdraw from the public mainstream altogether.

I just find most new movies asinine. If they put a new series that I like on TV, it doesn't last long. Right now, I don't know anyone who likes to read books. I can remember when a new book could cause a big stir; now you never hear people discussing the books they're reading.

Funny isn't funny anymore either. I am so tired of jokes involving bodily functions. And it's not funny when someone falls down or breaks things or excretes weird substances.

To sum it up, we are the exception rather than the rule.

Some people just don't care. They think that the best way to live is to do nothing and be nothing. It doesn't just happen in the UK though. There are people like that all over the world. I see a lot of it in the US too.

Because they're too dumb to know the difference and don't think the UK has a monopoly on moronic imbeciles either!
