At a certain point, influential blacks asked to be called African Americans, so following the general principle of calling people what they want to be called, many did so. Personally I find it cumbersome and culturally naive. After all, not all Africans are the same, any more than all Europeans are the same. How much would, say, a Dane and a Serb have in common? After all, they're both European!

Thus far, I haven't heard that any white people *seriously* want to be called European Americans. If you do, I'll indulge you, but you'll be sorry.

I think it's political correctness. People are so worried about offending people these days. My cousin is black. He's not African American, he's not colored, he's black. We've had quite a few conversations about how people describe him and I know for a fact he hates the term African American, I don't refer to him as that...lol Seriously, I will use the correct term on here mostly because people get offended so easily on here. I guess know matter how you say something, someone gets offended.

Because blacks did not like to be called "black", "*****"...they felt insulted! how ridiculous is that? now "African American" is better for them, while I think it's just a racist label, it sets them apart from the rest of the American community.

because that is what they preferred to be called back when all of the racial issues were going on in the 60's and 70's. they were being called other names that were not very proper.
