Tickets for a high school dance cost $1 each if purchased in advance of the dance, but are $1.50 each if bought at the door. If 100 tickets were sold and $120 was collected, how many tickets were sold in advance and how many were sold at the door?

x=number of tickets sold in advance
y=number of tickets sold at the door

x+y=100 tickets
y=100-x

1.00x + 1.50y = $120

Substitute in your value for y from above so you are working with all x values

1.00x + 1.50(100-x) = $120
1x + 150-1.5x = 120

Keep solving and you will find your value for x. When you have that, you can find out y (tickets at the door), with y=100-x.

I don't want to do all the work for you, but hopefully this helps.

Let 'x' tickets be sold in advance and 'y' tickets at the door.

Since 100 tickets were sold,
x + y = 100
or, y = 100 - x ..............(i)

Earnings from tickets sold in advance = $ x
Earnings from tickets sold at door = $ 1.5y

Therefore,
total earnings = $ x + $ 1.5 y = $ 120
but from (i),
x + 1.5(100 - x) = 120
or, x + 150 - 1.5x = 120
or, -0.5x = 120 - 150
or, -0.5x = -30
or, x = -30/-0.5
or x = 60

y = 100 - x
or y = 100 - 60
or y =40

ANS: 60 tickets were sold in advance and 40 tickets were sold at the door.

60 were sold before and 40 were sold at the door.

60*$1.00=$60 in advance

40*$1.50=$60 at the door.

total $120!

60 tix at 1.00 = 60.00 and 40 tix at 1.50 =60

60.00+60.00=120

60+40=100 tix
