In game they say that using character class weapons and armor increase your damage and effectiveness in battle. I'm a mage and I sorta don't like using staves, so I use a shield and sword. Will that reduce my magic damage or does it not matter?

no, no, no, you got the conversation wrong, they were talking about how you can improve your weapon class, not your RACIAL weapons, there are no racial weapons, but you CAN improve each weapon by use. and no, it will not bring your spell casting down at all.

Using your skills will increase the effectiveness of that skill. Using armor will reduce your magic effectiveness, but not by much, and increasing your armor skill will reduce the drain. There is a "Spell Effectiveness" stat on the bottom of your spell screen. When you make your character, certain skills will start off higher than others, for example, if you have a Mage Class, your magic skills will start off 10 points higher than their base value.

Character Creation:
All skills start at base value of 5.

Each race gives certain skill bonuses, these are added to the base value.

Each Specialization (Magic, Warrior, Stealth) gives 7 skills a +10 bonus added to the base value.

All Major Skills are given a "Base Value" of 25. All Race and Specialization bonuses are added to the 25.

After that, only skill use will increase your skills, you can play the game however you want.

Ok, know this from experience. At the begining you do see a slight drop in the effectivness of your spells, but not from the weapon, its the shield. When you wear armor that your not good at you get a penalty on the effectiveness of your spells. Luckily as you become more skilled in that armor class, be it heavy or light, or both if you perfer, that penalty goes away. hope this helps cause mages rule.

Yes it does matter because you don't have a mage type weapon you have a warrior type.

It really doesn't matter.

As long as you work on that particular skill (if it's low) you should be able to use whatever you want.
