Sartre believed that each individual had the power and obligation to act or not as he saw fit and this is what produced his essence. The views of others should not influence the things about which we are concerns

Three important things:

1) It's not that you can act as you see fit always, but that in any situation, even in constraining ones (the norm) there is always at least two things you could do, and it is your duty, and your way of being fully human, to know your options and act the most authentically you can.

2) People do not like being free, and elaborate an infinite number of ways of "bad faith", to tell themselves that what they do, they had to do, there was no option.

3) Most situations are constricting, you do not have a full range of options realistically open to you. This is a societal matter, and requires political activism (including perhaps revolution) to create a society in which you can be more fully human than now.

his theory was that in any situation a person has a choice to act in some way; even when most or all choices are taken from you, you would still have death as a choice.

What's good about his notion of freedom is that he sees your choices as independent from your past, or from your facticity. Meaning it frees you from any preexisting notions about you that would determine what you will become. So, for example if I'm a smoker and I've smoked for 10 years, I can wake up one day and say: I'm independent of my past, my smoking for the past 10 years will not determine whether or not I will smoke today. Hope this helps.

hey!
i'm a french crazy about sartre
so i must warn you : i will certainly make big mistakes!
please forgive me!
i hope at least you'll understand!

according to sartre, humans are totally free
this is to say, they are responsible of their acts
but this freedom is frightening, it would mean that i am entirely responsible, and alone in the world
i must decide what i'm going to do
since they are afraid of it, humans invent things like the unconscious, that can excuse them, explain why they acted like this
but this is "bad faith", they lied to themselves so as to be forgiven and forgive themselves

because i am responsible of my actions, i must be careful :
through them, i represent the humanity
my acts are those of all humans
moreover, my acts express what i am
i am not determined before, i determine myself acting

he said "l'existence précède l'essence" to express this
i don't know how to translate it
it could be : "the existence precedes the being"
precedes means : determines

from then on, i am forced to choose, so as to exist, to be myself
in politics, i must belong to a party,
and i must not follow other's opinions, or the chief's willing, like a sheep

i am free, there is no god above me, no hell under, i must decide of what i am
i must accept this freedom,
assert it,
even if it's difficult and makes me suffer
or else, i'm not a real human
just a poor sheep

i hope i helped you!

good night

He has not views or theories. He is dead. He 'had' views and theories however, and they can be read about in any number of books online and off.
