The best British Films were made by Handmade Films in the late 1970's 1980's starting with Life of Brian and going on to Time Bandits, Mona Lisa, The Long Good Friday, Withnail & I, A Private Function and on. The company was owned by George Harrison (Yes the Lead Guitarist for the Beatles and later a Solo Artist with his first wonderful album All things Must Pass and going on to do the very first Charity concert Concert For Bangladesh) and he is credited with single handedly reviving the British Film Industry. He had a wicked sense of humour and he sometimes took little cameo parts in the films - which are rarely creditted, so you have to know he is doing it. Check them out if you can -

"The Long Good Friday" is widely considered to be the best British Gangster movie ever made. In it, Bob Hoskins gives a riveting performance as Harold Shand, a tough and patriotic gangster whose world is falling apart around him and he cannot figure out why. Aside from being (I think) Hoskins first film, it is also Pierce Brosnan's first film, although he doesn't speak a word.
