Civilization as we know it is coming to an end soon. This is not the wacky proclamation of a doomsday cult, apocalypse bible prophecy sect, or conspiracy theory society. Rather, it is the scientific conclusion of the best paid, most widely-respected geologists, physicists, bankers, and investors in the world. These are rational, professional, conservative individuals who are absolutely terrified by a phenomenon known as global "Peak Oil."

Americans come in many races, cultures, ages and (at least ;-) ) two sexes. If you want to know what they are most afraid of, ask them what they consider "American" and then as such, what they are most afraid of. I'm not sure that there is even much concensus on what American means other than nationality.

For myself and how I define "American," I would say that a declining power status and overpopulation due to corruption are my biggest "concerns" since I fear nothing. Those two alone will affect the whole world, not just our country.

Some would say terrorism, but I disagree. With all the rushing about and competing to live a better lifestyle, I would say it is the fear that they will not get to experience the American Dream.

i would have to say the fear of being accepted, thats why we buy what we buy, thats why we do what we do. I think some people live a life they think society wants them to live, and not the life they truely want. and it's funny i say that , because that is the very essense of freedom, to do what you want, and that is what this country is all about. yet i think it's are biggest fear, is to not doing whats "right".

There are two groups top consider.
1.the uneducated, pretend religious and extremist pro-imperial-presidential imperial-power advocates fear terrorists and informed voters, not necessarily in that order; the terrorists because they can't control them by force and the informe voter because when told that they are doing in Washington, he will vote for someone sane.

the educated, who favor secular government because it works on Earth and who want balance of powers, a constitution that protects individuals and a scientific category basis to legal definitions, job descriptions, product labeling, headlines, and non-fictional statements.
What they fear is the destruction of constitutional protections for individual rights, being done by the uneducated, pretend religious and extremist pro-imperial-presidential imperial-power advocates through their elected infallibility-spouting, pragmatic-impractical leaders at every level of government.

Public speaking is listed as the #1 fear, followed closely by death. Why??? I'd have to guess at that one... fear of disapproval, rejection, failure? Death should be obvious... fear of the unknown &/or pain.
