AMD RAM problems?

I have an eMachines T2685 Desktop Computer, I have bought 1GB of RAM for it, (2 sticks of 512) and when I put it in, it will boot up just fine, but will only display that I have 512 of RAM in there. I took out the old stick and put in the new stick, and it said that it was there. I put them both back in, and it only showed 512 again! Please help

Install one stick at a time, test to see what happens, then switch the RAM sticks.
