Yes and no. Just the existance of an external hard drive won't add speed to your computer--it'll just add storage space. On the other hand, if you've got a lot of files cluttering your primary hard drive, moving those to your external drive will allow you to clean up your primary drive (this is important because the fuller any hard drive gets, the slower it gets). Defragmenting your primary hard drive will take less time if it's not as cluttered--and defragmenting is the single best thing you can do to speed up your system and prevent strange program behavior.

Also, if you tend to do lengthy things such as video encoding, it'll speed the process up slightly if you put your source video on one hard drive, and direct your target at the other drive. The slight speed increase comes from your computer not having to share the BUS speed of one hard drive by dividing it into "source comes out, goes to CPU/RAM, then goes right back into same hard drive it came from" strategies.

If you really want noticable speed, however, you'll most likely be more pleased if you either upgrade your RAM, processor, or both.

No. An external hard disk drive will give you... well... more hard disk space!

A faster CPU would speed your computer up.
