What's the deal with the whole theme thing? Like yesterday, it was Gwen Stefani day and everyone was singing her stuff, but then Blake goes and sings a 311 song. Do they not have to follow the theme or something?

The theme was Gwen Stefani (both her days with No Doubt and as a solo artist) and all of the artists who inspired her, like The Police, The Cure, etc., etc.

They didn't have to sing her songs but they could do so if they wanted to. The theme this week was songs that inspired Gwen. the choices were Donna Summer, the Pretenders, The Police, The Cure( 311 covered the song)andCyndi Lauper, and of course No Doubt

It was a dumb theme if you ask me

I think the theme was probably the 80's or Gwen Stefani? The song Blake sang was originally by the Cure. There was also The Police sang and Pat Benetar. That's the only connection I can make.

The actual theme was "Gwen Stefani's favorite songs" which didn't necessarily mean that the contestants had to sing one of her songs. They just had to sing one of her favorites, although I think that they should of had to sing one of her songs. All of the other guest stars that are on there have the contestants sing their songs, why should Gwen Stefani be any different? It would have been a chance to see what kind of variety the contestants have.

No it was Gwen Stefani Favorites week, that means they could have chosen any song Gwen likes.

But Gwen did not like the song Blake sang, it says it here.http://tv.yahoo.com/collections/1251

The actual theme was Pop Invasion.

No and I'm glad they didn't all sing No Doubt songs, even though I like No Doubt. I thought it was almost horrible to go up to Gwen Stefani and tell her, then sing one of her songs to her. Even she didn't seem too thrilled in her comments about each contestant. I almost wished she would have looked at them and said, "here is how it's sung" than sang the song, the basically told them to pick a different song.

Haha... go Blake! I don't watch the show, so I couldn't really say for sure. I don't think it's required that they sing a song because of the theme. If Gwen didn't have anything that Blake could sing, then that's probably why he chose 311.

The theme was No Doubt/Gwen Stefani/bands that inspired Gwen Stefani's music.

Yes, they all must pick from a list of approved songs that pertain to the theme.

Um, not everyone sang Gwen Stefani songs. Two of the guys sang songs from Sting/Police. It was all about Gwen *and* her influences. Ryan talked about it at the start of the show.

Well I think the artist just comes on the show to mentor the contestants- I also thought that they HAD to sing the guest artist's songs, maybe Gwen did a remix of that 311 song...perhaps.
Otherwise, the whole deal is to mentor the contenstants. It was a good show though- did you see that Sanjaya hair. goodness...that guy must have angels watching over him- for him to actually be in the top 10 is beyond me!!
