Basically this means that the oxygen sensor downstream (after) the catalytic converter on bank 1 is detecting that the converter is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

This could either be the sensor or the catalytic converter itself. There probably is no noticeable driveability problems, but the car will fail emissions testing if you have that in your area.

If your car is less than 10yrs old and under 100K miles, you should be able to get the dealer to replace the components under the emissions systems warranty.

P0420 means that the computer is getting a signal that the catalytic converter is not functioning properly. this is either because it is truly not working or because the )2 sensor is sendign a corrupted signal.

to start out make sure that the exhaust is flowing properly. make sure you have what feels liek adequate pressure at the tail pipe. also make sure that the catalyst material in the converter has not broken loose. a lack of clow can set thsi code as well.

if the exhaust and catalytic vconverter check out alright: If the truck is new enough to have OBD II then you should be able to take it to a shop or borrow a scanner that will show live data. this will let you know if the 02 sensor is properly switchin between high and low. or you can remove the sensor and bench test it. thsi means to put it in a vice and put a volt meter on the signal wire and grounds respectively. then heat the snsoer and you should see a spike in voltage when the heat hits it. if it does not go up to .6 volts quickly then it is a safe bet that the sensor is bad

Hi

This is pointing to a fault with the catalytic convertor. P0420 is not thrown up by faulty O2 sensors, they have their own fault codes.

Have the cat checked out, but I think that unless they can revive it then you'll need to have it replaced.

They can connect a device called a "fueller" to your vehicle and instruct it to make the engine run lean for a while which can sometimes revive cats.

Best of luck

Its either your cat converter is gone or the sensor on the exhaust after the cat.

Its more than likely the cat as its a few years old now.
