Hi!
You can't go wrong with an iPod. I have an iPod mini and it's the best thing I own!
A 2GB iPod Nano (stores 500 songs) costs £99.
An iPod Shuffle (stores 240 songs) is only £55.
They also sell brilliant speakers on the Apple website - they range from about £50-£300, so have a look and see what you think!
If you already have a great stereo, you can also buy transmittors that you connect to your iPod and it means you can play it straight through your stereo speakers (and in your car, if you have one!)
I've included direct links below which should give you all the info you need!
xx Emmie
oh. PS for free downloads, Google 'Kazaa' - that's the program I use. You'll need to make an initial payment (usually about £20 - I can't remember the exact amount). You won't get songs totally for free anywhere else - paying a one-off amount makes it legal. After that, you don't have to pay for any songs you download!

Get yourself a 30gb iPod Video. If you have a Stereo already, buy a Dock such as the Onkyo Dock (I own one connected to My Pioneer Amp and Mission Floor-standing Speakers, it sounds Fantastic and can Shake the House!). If you don't have a Stereo, buy yourself a Bose Sound Dock @ £250 and the iPod Video. The sound volume won't rock the house, but the sound quality is fantastic and it doesn't take up much space. The Bose, will push you over your overall budget, but the Onkyo won't!

You say you want good sound? Then you DO NOT want an iPod or mp3 player.
At best, the sound quality is bearable, at worst it's truly abysmal.
Price doesn't matter, they are all poorly made rubbish, designed to last a few months, then be thrown away and replaced.
If you don't believe me, check out all the iPod and mp3 problems posted by users of this site...
If you are only going to listen to music in your home and you genuinely want decent sound quality, then you need a CD player, amplifier and speakers.
