On one day, 4 gardeners and 4 helpers earned $360. On another day, working the same number of hours and at the same rate of pay, 5 gardeners and 6 helpers earned $480. How much does a gardener earn each day and how much does a helper earn each day?

Please help me. This is very confusing to me. Step by step explaination will be helpful. Thanks!

this is algebra question.

If you rephrase the question in algebra terms it looks something like this:
4g + 4h = 360
5g + 6h = 480

A gardener makes 60 and a helper makes 30. Try to plug them in you'll see.

4(60) + 4(30) 5(60) + 6(30)
240 + 120 = 360 300 + 180 = 480

Please dont ask me how i arrived to that cause i randomly numver pluged, but Im sure you can figure out the algebra formula stuff if you look back at your notes or textbook.

Good Luck on your Homework Assignment

Is it a substitution problem? If so, we'll put them into variables.

Gardener=g Helper=h

4g+4h=360
5g+6h=480

We'll start with g in the first equation:

4g+4h=360 (subtract 4h to both sides)
4g=360 - 4h (divide 4 from g to both sides)
g=90 - h

Now, substitute that into the second equation:

5(90 - h)+6h=480 (90 - h replaces the g)
450 - 5h+6h=480
450+h=480 (like terms are collected)
h=30
the helpers get 30 per person

You can plug 30 into either equation. We'll try the first equation:
4g+4(30)=360 (30 replaces h)
4g+120=360
4g=240
g=60
the gardeners get 60 per person

Let g=gardeners and h=helpers.
4h + 4g=360
and
5g + 6h = 480
Solve one (either one) for either g or h (once again, either one)
solving the first equation for helpers gives you:
4h=360-4g
h= (360 - 4g)/4
factor out a 4 from the top:
h= 4(90-g)/4
so
h=90-g
now, plug this into the second equation
5g+6h=480
5g + 6(90-g)=480
-g=-60
multipy both sides by -1
g=60
plug this into your h equation
h=90-g
h=90-60
h=30
So, gardeners make $60 a day and helpers $30

4 gardeners and 4 helpers = 8 workers. 360 divided by 8 = $45 they each make. 5 gardeners and 6 helpers = 11 workers. 480 divided by 11 = about $44 each. add up 44 and 45 = 89. 89 divided by 2 = $44.50.

Let g = gardener and h = helper

4g + 4h = 360
5g + 6h = 480

solve first equation for g:

4g = 360 - 4h
g = 90 - h

Substitute into 2nd equation:

5(90-h) + 6h = 480

450 - 5h + 6h = 480
450 + h = 480
h = 30

Go back to the 1st equation and substitute:

4g + 4(30) = 360
4g + 120 = 360
4g = 240
g = 60
