I have tried anti-spyware software, and I have even tested my memory. It tests out fine. What else can I try to speed up my computer?

Download 'Hijack This!' here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php

This will help you remove some of the hidden programs on your computer slowing it down.

You can also hold down the the following buttons (in order and continuously) 'Ctrl' 'Alt' and 'Delete' - this will bring up a window of all the programs running on your computer. Some of these are viruses intentionally created to slow down your computer. Clicking 'end program' will only temporarily halt these programs from running. They will resume again upon startup, but you will notice the effects immediately if they are the programs slowing your computer down. There are ways to permenately remove these programs.

Also sometimes computer slowdown is just the compounded effect of many programs you've installed over time using up all your memory. Many programs when they are installed are set to run on startup and in the background. If you take a look at your taskbar (the icon bar at the very bottom right of your screen) you will get an idea if this could be the case with your computer. Lots of icons mean lots of programs running. A lot of these programs give you the option of disabling them, thus freeing up more memory.

These things only pertain to windows based machines with these features.

On last thing. A memory upgrade is the single most important thing you can do to speed up your computer. Putting in more memory into a slowing computer will do volumes for the speed at which your computer runs especially if your computer is struggling to find enough resources at the moment.

Check out the free space available in your system partition (C:) if you're running out of space, then this gonna slow things down, also don't let alot of application have an icon on the system tray (behind the clock) because these programs are actually working in the background and wasting your resources.
You may also add some memory modules (RAM) to speed up your machine.

A couple of things here. One that 99% of the people forget is to de-freg the drive(s). This causes slow access times as the disk has to read multiple times just to find the complete file. The other is finding out what is loaded as device drivers and what is load from startup. Removing drivers and programs that are not needed improves performance greatly. Get a copy of hijackthis to see what is being loaded all around. It also offers options to remove as well. As always backup your registry first before using this program.

Buy more RAM. Find out what RAM card your computer needs and get about a Gig at best buy or some such other place. Just open the computer while it's turned off and put it in the slot. You might have to remove that little 256 RAM card that's in there first. Good luck!

Switch to Linux.
Windows is too high maintenance.
~BTW~
My OS doesn't get Viruses or Trojans or Spyware so I don't need a scanner.

The file system of my OS doesn't need to be de-fragmented.

My OS doesn't need constant security patches.

No one can turn my OS into a zombie email spammer.

No one can hi jack the ports or sockets on my OS.

No one can dictate to me what kind of media content that I can view or listen to on my machine with my OS.

I don't have to activate my OS with a special number.

No one can deny me access to updates if my OS doesn't pass scrutiny.

I can put my OS on as many of my machines as I want with no restrictions.

I can move my OS on the hard drive from one machine to another.

I can run my OS as a desktop or a server and I don't need to buy additional email clients.

Most of the software apps for my OS are open source and are free.

I can run Windows Apps on my OS too.

And best of all, my OS is free and always available.

Besides, I am way ahead of the curve with Linux and my skills are in demand.

So go ahead and chain yourselves to Windows OS and see if I care.
:)

darn, someone beat me to it. I was gonna make a comment about porn too.

hard drive might be full.
you might have too many things running in the background. Bring up the Task Manager (ctl alt del will get you there). Then go to the processes tab. And then sort by memory usage. See what's running.

you can go to system restore, but you will lose whatever is on your system. you can also go on the internet, go to tools, internet options, delete files, delete cookies.
you can also try going to my computer, hard drive c, properties, clean disk space, consolidate your files, go to temporary internet files and delete them. one last bit of advice would be to system tools, and go back to a previous date before your pc started running slow.
hope this helps.
i have to clean my pc once a week for optimal performance.
