ive just bought a 1999 ford f 450 pickup truck. its a 7.3 powerstoke deisel with a banks turbo. but i went on a 120 mile trip yesterday and i heard a grinding noise only at high rev. so i stoped and look under the hood and the turbo was glowing red. why. could it b the bearing

I'm not a turbo mechanic but I do know it should not be glowing red or grinding. Sounds like you've lost lubrication and the bearing(s) are shot. I'd get it checked pretty quick as this could conceivably start a fire or at least fail and leave you stranded.

I've heard turbos often fail when the engine is habitually shut off before the turbo has a chance to spin down. As soon as you shut the engine off the oil pump stops pumping oil to the turbo and the bearings get starved for lubrication. After months or years of that they fail.

Buy a Toyota! Less Gas Mileage and Less Maintenance!
I used to own a Jeep and a VW, Oh what a pain, now I own a Toyota 4 Runner and couldn't be happier with it! Unless, you are hauling something like a boat then Settle for a FORD Dually! Just my experience...Good Luck!
