In either the time period between 1890-1900 or in the 1920's,
Would it have been possible for an American to be traveling in the Mid-east. I dont know what was going on as far as wars or customs ect. If possible, what issues might there have been. Could they sneak in? In the latter date would they have flown? Otherwise, any idea on good places to research this on-line?

It would have been possible, although I don't know of any specific American. In the late 19th Century, a British adventurer named Dougherty went with the hadj (pilgrimage to Mecca), although he didn't make it completely to Mecca or Medina. He recounted this in "Travels in Arabia Deserta." Richard Burton (not the same as Liz's husband) also explored Arabia and other countries, and he may have snuck into Mecca. I don't remember the name of his book.

If by the Middle East you mean Egypt, Palestine and so forth sure, no big deal. Mark Twain had travelled in the Middle East in the late 1860s. If you mean the desert of Arabia that would have been a lot more difficult.
