A soccer ball has two main components: a stitched cover and an air bladder.

The cover used to be made out of natural leather, but when it got wet, the ball would absorb water and become heavy. Nowadays, the ball is made from either plastic or a leather synthetic called PU Leather, which is cut into panels and stitched together or mechanically seam bonded.

Inside the cover, a rubber bladder is placed that holds the air pressure similar to a bicycle tire. The bladder is connected to the outside by a valve, and is inflated using a pump and a ball needle, similar to a hypodermic (or medical) needle.
